ORTHODONTICS

What is Orthodontics?

The word “Orthodontics” is derived from the Greek words “ortho” meaning straight and “odons” meaning tooth.

The field of orthodontics is a specialized branch of Dentistry that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of teeth alignment on the dental bone (alveolar crests) and facial irregularities.

Although the term suggests proper teeth, the scope of orthodontics goes beyond that. Nowadays, it not only deals with teeth but also addresses facial irregularities of the upper and lower face. The field of orthodontics examines the three-dimensional positions of the upper and lower jaws in relation to the skull base and to each other, as well as the relationships of the teeth.

In the 2000s, with the emergence of new applications in orthodontics, age limitations have been largely eliminated for many treatments. Options for treatment are available for adult patients as well, and with a focus on aesthetics, patient satisfaction and comfort are prioritized in the successful implementation of orthodontic treatments.

The Objectives of Orthodontics

Orthodontics, with its primary objective of treating dental irregularities, can be abstractly divided into two main parts. Particularly during childhood years, the first part of orthodontics involves identifying potential dental irregularities through regular check-ups, creating and implementing a preventive treatment plan to address these issues.

This helps prevent potential problems that might arise in later years. The initial orthodontic examination usually starts around the ages of 7-8. Early monitoring and, if necessary, treatment contribute to a child’s healthy jaw development, proper alignment of permanent teeth, adjustment of lip and tongue functions, and correction of bad habits. This promotes a balanced and healthy physical and psychological development.

However, in many cases, early diagnosis and treatment are missed. As a result, individuals often encounter orthodontic problems when they reach adulthood. This is where the second part of orthodontic treatment comes into play, which involves correcting existing irregularities. With comprehensive information and advanced technology-driven treatment methods, successful orthodontic procedures can also be performed on adults. This is why it’s never too late to achieve a new smile.

Invisalign (Wireless Dental Treatment)

Wireless orthodontic treatment, also known as Invisalign, involves correcting certain degrees of dental misalignment and malocclusion without the use of traditional metal bands, brackets, or wires. Instead, it utilizes customized, nearly invisible clear aligner trays that are designed specifically for each individual. These trays are removable and are changed every two weeks to progressively shift the teeth into the predetermined final positions as determined by the dentist.

One of the key advantages of this system is that it eliminates the need for metal bands, brackets, or wires, which can collect food particles and bacterial plaque in traditional treatments. The aligners used in this system are virtually invisible. Additionally, the aligners are removable, making oral hygiene maintenance easier compared to other systems. This reduces the risk of bacterial plaque buildup, tooth decay, and gum disease.

With each aligner change, the teeth gradually move to their corrected positions. The system’s effectiveness lies in its ability to provide a discreet and convenient orthodontic treatment option for individuals seeking an alternative to traditional braces.

Lingual Ortodontics (Incognito)

Lingual orthodontics, also known as Incognito, is a technique in which the brackets that attach the wires applying force to the teeth are placed on the back surfaces of the teeth facing the tongue, instead of the front surfaces facing the lips. The most significant advantage of this technique is that it remains completely unseen.

Nowadays, custom-made lingual appliances are available, and due to their personalized design, the treatment outcomes are highly successful compared to other lingual treatment methods. Thanks to their customized structure, patients adapt quickly to the appliances, and there are no issues like speech impairment or tongue sores that can occur with other methods. Within two weeks, patients become accustomed to the appliance in their mouth and continue their daily life as usual.

Unlike other lingual treatment methods, this technique has a broader range of applications. Virtually all malocclusions can be treated using this method. Its personalized nature also slightly shortens the treatment duration. As it is made from a gold alloy, it is non-allergenic. Gold is one of the most biocompatible materials.
